about

'Bring Your Own Binoculars EP' is a gathering of warm and fuzzy, mild-mannered lockdown miniatures inspired by birdwatching during The Year That Never Was and the teachings of Joe Pera.

I went into the project with two albums in mind - Robert Wyatt's solitary, windswept 1992 gem 'Dondestan' and 'Friends' by The Beach Boys, a placid collection ridiculed upon release back in 1968 for being so at odds with the socio-political upheaval of the time.

In the end other influences probably loom larger - my undying adoration of Sean O'Hagan and The High Llamas, Bill Wells, Tenniscoats, Basil Kirchin plus some of the great recent albums by the likes of Andrew Wasylyk, Oliver Cherer, Hampshire and Foat, Mocke, Julian Curwin, David Rothon (in fact anything on the Clay Pipe Music label)... I could go on.

Intentionally a product of its own limitations, I wanted it to reflect upon the detached insularity of 2020 at the same time as maybe providing some relief from its relentless, bewildering drift.

Craig chirps heartbreakingly on a mini melodica on one track (as well as providing a wonderful collage for the artwork) while Lloyd Gabriel brings ingenious synth countermelodies to another. Rory Ballantyne chips in with another marvellous mastering job. Otherwise it's all me, my guitar and my MIDI orchestra.

Thanks for listening,
Dave.
