about

'On A Hiding To Nothing EP' is the second release under the solo alias Gordon Bennett, following last year's 'Bring Your Own Binoculars EP' (which was originally credited to News from Neptune but has since been retroactively attributed to the pseudonym).

Reflecting on another year that proved trickier to navigate than anticipated, it presents sleepy, sad pastoral pop, in its own little world and very much away with the fairies.

Key inspirations would perhaps include The High Llamas, Robert Wyatt, duo-era Microdisney, Woo, The Durutti Column, Oddfellow's Casino, Hamilton Yarns, The Montgolfier Brothers, David Rothon, Oliver Cherer, Hampshire and Foat, The Clientele... and so forth.

The vocals were recorded in a hurry on my phone when no-one else was in the house. I was tempted to redo them but their air of semi-detachment seemed to make a strange sort of sense in context.

Craig Sinclair provides the beautiful artwork and (as you may have guessed) all but one of the track titles while Rory Ballantyne sprinkles the mastering magic dust.
